There are complex changes in the immune response following stroke. A robust systemic inflammatory response occurs, but at the same time, there is a sympathetically mediated decrease in the Th1 immune response. This defect in the Th1 immune response appears to increase the risk of post-stroke infection, which is independently associated with worse outcome from stroke. How post-stoke infection mediates this worse outcome is unclear, but growing data suggest that post-stroke infection may increase the likelihood of developing detrimental autoimmune responses to brain antigens.
In this lecture, Dr. Becker will
  1. Review the systemic changes in the immune response after stroke.
  2. Discuss risk factors for post-stroke infection.
  3. Explore the possible mechanisms by which post-stroke infection worsens outcome.
