Racial-Ethnic Disparities in Stroke Care: The American Experience


  • Racial and ethnic minorities now constitute 28 percent of the U.S. population, and that number is expected to reach nearly 40 percent by 2030.
  • It is estimated that Hispanic-Americans, the fastest-growing minority group in the U.S., now represent 14 to 15 percent of the U.S. population; African-Americans account for 12 percent; and Asian-Americans and Native Americans represent approximately 7 percent.
  • With the percentage of racial and ethnic minorities in the U.S. almost doubling by the year 2050, there is an increasing need to reduce race-ethnic disparities in health care.
